At the end of the summer the city of Jyväskylä in Finland will host the 5th International Alvar Aalto Design Seminar. Organized by the Alvar Aalto Academy in conjunction with the Alvar Aalto Museum, the seminar is scheduled for 31 August and 1 September 2007 and has a hugely optimistic title: It’s a Beautiful Day.

Is it possible to create something surprising? Design an object that helps resolve the problem’s of today’s world? One capable of turning an ordinary day into a beautiful day? The challenge shared by the designers who will meet for the two-day seminar in the central auditorium of the University of Jyväskylä (built by Alvar Aalto in 1954-55) will be to answer these questions.

The Finnish professionals and international guests invited to tackle these subjects include Louise Campbell from Denmark, Dai Fujiwara (creative director of Issey Miyake) from Japan, Hella Jongerius from Holland and Ronan Bouroullec from France, Miguel Fluxa (for Camper) from Spain and Adriaan Beukers, co-author of the essays Lightness and Flying lightness.
