“Critical design” is a term coined by Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby to define an approach that considers the social implications of design and its more immaterial aspects. While it was these two British designers who started off the idea, other cutting-edge designers have since taken up the banner of critical design, such as Catalan Martí Guixé and Jurgen Bey of The Netherlands.

A long way off from market logic, the four designers, who feature in an exhibition at the Z33 gallery in Belgium (until 3 June), examine the role of design in relation to the pervasiveness of technology in contemporary society, considering the psychological and spiritual aspects of an object and inviting contemplation through the use of humour.
