The inventor of the future

After Gaetano Pesce comes Joe Colombo. The association between the Milan Triennale and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein has produced a second appointment with a leading Italian figure whose creativity touched several disciplines: art, design and architecture. The exhibition covers all the work by this “inventor of the future”, the fruit of just over ten years’ work (he died at the age 41).

Visitors will have privileged views not only of the original models of Colombo’s most important projects but also of documents and previously unseen pieces, including experimental models, drawings and plans. The overview is organised into four themed and chronological sections: from the early artistic and architectural creations (accompanied by a collection of personal objects and previously unseen graphic works telling Joe’s life story) to his first industrial designs (including masterpieces such as the Elda armchair, the Universale chair and the Acrilica lamp). It then illustrates his change of direction towards a modular and flexible concept of living systems (Combi Center storage and “mobile programmabile”) before ending with the projects for multi-purpose living units and whole living environments such as Visiona 1, the Total Furnishing Unit and his 1968 apartment (the original furnishings are on show).

There is a treat for enthusiasts: a partial reconstruction of Visiona 1 will be displayed, along with a video of the interiors. After Milan, London (Design Museum), Manchester (Cube Gallery), Weil am Rhein and Berlin (Vitra Design Museum) will be promoting the genius of Joe Colombo. L.M.
