Ron Arad at Venice Biennale

Ron Arad’s Rover Chair from 1981 respects the principle of quality mass production yet possesses the appearance of a one-off. Made from Rover 2000 reclining seats, it reveals a certain fascination for the ready made. Arad’s design, in particular those pieces produced in Italy, features in this exhibition that was held to coincide with the IX Venice Architecture Biennale.

With a display that brings together famous pieces, prototypes, unrealised projects and previews, one comes to understand how an “outsider” (described by his teacher Peter Cook as “the naughty boy of British design) has been able to become an irrevocable reference point. L.B.
