Vietri: a new gallery for ceramics

At Vietri sul Mare it’s all ready. The inauguration is set for Sunday 16 May when the Manuel Cargaleiro museum opens to the public, a brand new space dedicated to the art and tradition of ceramics. The museum is housed in the historic Carosino Ducal Palace and is intended as a place in which to look at the relationship between ceramics and architecture, starting with the inaugural exhibition that present installations in ceramics from the Paris and Lisbon metro.

At the centre of the collection are 150 works donated by Portuguese artist Manuel Cargaleiro, maestro of what is known as “céramique architecturale” and a collaborator of Siza. The foundation has already set up a programme of purchases that intends to favour works characterised by the integration of ceramics in architecture or the use of ceramic as a material for the “representation” of architecture.

Amongst the first ‘mini architectures’ in ceramics in the collection feature those by Jean-Michel Doix, Nathalie Du Pasquier and Camille Virot from France; Swiss French artist Jacques Kaufmann; Jean Legrand and Frank Steyaert from Belgium; Nicolas Pit from Luxemburg, Maria Bofill from Spain and Riccardo Alisi and Aldo Cibic from Italy. To coincide with the opening of the museum, the international award for lifetimes work “Viaggo attraverso la ceramica” will be awarded to Betty Woodman.
