Creative consultant Ilse Crawford chose the designers and managed the project, names included Hella Jongerius, Tord Boontje, Georg Baldele and Paola Navone. The result is seven chandeliers each with a highly personal touch where glass is mixed with nylon, LED, Plexiglas, rubber, steel and candles.
They will be hung in the stairwell and foyer of the Design Museum as part of an exhibition in which the café will become the Crystal Palace Tea Room for the duration of the installation. A culinary touch is also to be added, along with tea will be served Viennese cakes and other Austrian delicacies.
