Henri Cartier-Bresson on show in Martigny

“My passion has never been for photography in itself but for the possibility of recording in a fraction of a second the emotion of a subject, and the beauty of the form”. Henri Cartier Bresson wrote these words in 1994 and the photographs on exhibit in Martigny prove their truth. Two-hundred photos in black and white testify to 30 years of emotions and tell the story of the long friendship which inter-connected three families: the Bressons (Henri and his wife Martine), the Szafrans (the artist Sam, his wife Lilette and their son, Sébastien) and the Gianaddas (Léonard and Annette). These pictures which were donated by Bresson to the Szafran family are part of the collection of the Swiss Foundation. E.S.
