The art of Ana Maria Tavares in São Paulo

Influenced by Niemeyer and the Brazilian modernists, Ana Maria Tavares creates sculptures that are halfway between art and industrial design. Her installations transform spaces and mix together elements from very different surroundings, such as airports – a recurring theme in the work of the São Paulo artist – and churches.

Take for example Exit II (Rotterdam Lounge) with Parede Niemeyer, where a large mirror installed on a wall of the Hagia Eirene Church in Istanbul reflects the interior while a metal stairway (such as those used to board planes) leads visitors onto a small platform. Here, putting on a headset, one can listen to the typical sounds of the airport.

On show in São Paulo is her latest installation Numinosum, which in October had the honour of being the first exhibition at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, designed by SANAA in Kanazawa (Domus n. 876, 2004). An octagonal font in shiny steel, it is surrounded by white walls that create a minimal and poetic allegory of capitalism while in the background the unusual soundtrack reproduces the sounds of the stock exchange.
