Theresa Hak Kyung Cha

A person kneeling like a kind of spiritual martyr dressed completely in white. Carefully bandaging the face with strips of material, all the same colour but with the words ‘Aveugle’ and ‘Voix’ written on them. This is how in 1975 Theresa Hak Kyung Cha described her condition as a woman and artist, divided between her far off country of origin (Korea, where she was born in 1951) and the United States where she has lived with her family for 13 years.

Curated by Constance Lewallen and Sabine Breitwasser, this exhibition reveals the work of an artist for the first time in Europe who is little known in the west and who represented an avant-garde moment in the field of conceptual art in the 60s and 70s. L.B.
