Long and Mashe: encounter in India
The exhibition that opens on 17 March at the PAC in Milan is the result of a recent and unique encounter between two contemporary artists – British land artist Richard Long and Jivya Soma Mashe of India, master of the traditional art of the warli tribe (who live 150 kilometres from Mumbai). As a result of a journey made my Long in the state of Maharashtra, the two artists were able to create a number of works together.
The exhibition, curated by Hervé Perdriolle, shows across a series of photographs, the fruit of their artistic dialogue. This, despite the differences reveals much in common – circles and spirals for example recur constantly in both Mashe’s paintings and the installations by Long. Mashe and Long also share respect and extreme sensibility for nature and the landscape. E.S.
