Alex Katz’ America in 25 small portraits

Strong, bright colours and clear, simple lines, these are the distinctive traits of the portraits by the United States’ artist Alex Katz (born in New York, in 1927).

Katz only needed a few elements to sketch the faces and silhouettes of those featured in the 25 small pictures, preparatory studies for large works, on show in Milan’s Galleria Monica De Cardenas (until 31 January), together with two large landscapes painted with oils.

Katz’ style is unmistakable. Lacking a 3D dimension, his works come close to abstract expressionism, to the realism of Edward Hopper, to Pop Art and, finally, to photography and cartoons. The silhouettes of friends, artists, poets, musicians, dancers, his son Vincent and his wife Ada, his main muse, and raised by him to an icon of our times, are almost like cardboard shapes cut outs and then glued on.
