Closing of the Walker: go ahead for project by Herzog & de Meuron

As from the middle of February and for at least a year the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis will be closed to carry out building work according to the project designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron. When it reopens in the spring of 2005 it will be larger and more suited to changing demands with new galleries, a small theatre, restaurant facilities and other public spaces.

In the meantime, in order to maintain visibility the centre will be organising events such as exhibitions and performances in other cities and has planned an image campaign. Five contemporary artists, including Yoko Ono, Matthew Barney and Frank Gaard, will be the authors of as many advertising posters displayed each two months in the city centre.

And that’s not all. By the summer, nine local artists will be given the job of transforming the nearby sculpture garden into a unique mini golf course. Film director Ericka Beckman will keep the public informed on the progress of the work with a spy camera on the building site whilst Thomas Hirschhorn will be building a giant sculpture/mobile library to take books around the city.
