Francis Picabia: major retrospective in Paris

Above all a painter, but also a poet, writer and magazine publisher. An exhibition dedicated to the genius of Francis Picabia is on at the Musée d’Art moderne de la Ville de Paris, the last of a series of monographic exhibitions dedicated to twentieth century figures: Derain, Fautrier, Giacometti, Kupka, Lissitzky, Rothko.

The exhibition illustrates the evolution of an artist always seeking new paths: from the first impressionist works to the last, more enigmatic, passing through a dadaist period. Picabia always crossed the confines of different schools with great ease: using photographs to paint landscapes to then seek to obtain through painting a synthesis of experiences without any defined model, attempting to capture of canvas the speed of the car and the city. Then with the discovery of the car, the turnaround which lead him to use industrial design as a pictorial resource. Then changing once more with the superimposition of classic models and finally reaching a kind of abstract art which doesn’t fit any category. A figure who underwent constant transformation who still fascinates artists today.
