Videoarte by Fabrizio Plessi in Rome

Contemporary art features for the first time at the Scuderie Papali in the Quirinale. Breaking the ice is “Paradisoinferno” protagonist of which is Fabrizio Plessi investigating the contrast between fire and water, the physical nature of materials and the lightness of images. With ten major works, from museums in New York, Cologne, Hanover, Vienna, Verona and San Diego, Plessi runs through his career which already in the seventies began to feature video installations.

The first floor of the Scuderie is a kind of Paradise of water, symbol of the force of creativity in Rome (from 1988). The water theme in this case is regenerating and purifying, also in Bombay-Bombay (I Lavatoi dell’Anima, from 1993), whilst Cristalli Liquidi (also from 1993) combines perceptive, visual and acoustic illusions with hundreds of glasses suspended upside down. Then on to Foresta Sospesa (1999), a kind of natural sanctuary from which water helps to find the way out and then the tumultuous water of Enigma degli Addii (1999).

The second floor instead is invaded by the flames of the Inferno. In Stanze del Fuoco (1999), we find metal, string, wood in an balance of weights, forged from fire. And then metal in Drawing Tables (2001) with their heavy structure, the drawings Only Fire and I Movimenti Catodici Barocchi (1996) in which fire is linked with sin. Isolation, created specially for the occasion, shows the unease of isolation beyond an iron grill and finally Foresta di Fuoco (2002): twelve statues in metal surrounding wood and branches and the fire of technology. All the pieces are accompanied by different soundtracks.
