In April and May it is the work of Dutch group of artists Atelier Van Lieshout (AVL) which combines art with design demands or in other words, unites art with life. This would seem to be the “philosophy” of a group of artists based in Rotterdam who over the years and in major museums around the world have built houses, mobile homes, studios, boats, a hospital, bar and restaurants. All their environments function perfectly and are ready for use, they are characterised by simple aesthetics and a recognisable style with respect to the surrounding space and propose new ways to live and work. In
Rome they have set up their latest installation “Maxi Capsule Hotel Luxus”: a hotel room inspired by the Japanese capsule hotel built in wood and fibreglass. A 3.7 x 2.2m block, 2m high which puts forward ideas and functions for so called transitional spaces which differ from the usual: rather than anonymous and somewhat abandoned places they are made more intriguing with forms and colours which stimulate the senses, emotions and imagination. Founded in 1995 by Dutch artist Joep van Lieshout (then just 31 years old), the Atelier has worked with Rem Koolhaas on the design of the bar of the Grand Palais Convention Center in Lille and is now made up of around thirty artists, designers, architects, carpenters and consultants.
