Toots Zynsky: glass sculptures

An exhibition of glass sculpture by American artist Toots Zynsky opens 9 March in the neo-classical surroundings of the Museo Correr in Venice, organised by Attilia Dorigato and designed by Daniela Ferretti. The exhibition comes to Venice after showing at Glasmuseet in Ebeltoft, Denmark and will then move to Belgium and then Germany.

Toots Zynsky presents, in this one man show, a selection of around fifty works in glass, made using the glass tubes produced exclusively in Murano. The artist takes these and works with them using particular and complex techniques developed with the help of a Dutch engineer, to create fine threads of glass, with which he makes the fascinating and highly coloured “fabric” which makes up his work.

Born in Boston in 1951, after training in design at the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, US, Toots Zynsky collaborated in the foundation of the Pilchuck School in Seattle where he was assistant to Dale Chihuly, one of the most important contemporary artists of glass, He decided to dedicate himself exclusively to this medium and in the eighties worked in Murano with Venini for whom he created the famous collections “Folto” and “Chicchera”. The strong link with Murano remains visible in his highly personalised use of the traditional glass tubes which he transforms in the creation of his evocative sculptures.
