The work on show documents the constant changes in contemporary artistic exploration carried out in cities such as New York and Los Angeles – “historical” centres of contemporary art – as well as cities less used to featuring on the experimental art circuit such as Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. Based on the predominant aspects of their work, the curator has identified a number of major trends and gouped the artists under three different subject headings. “A new home for man” deals with art related to the post-modern climate in which we live. The artists in this first section are: Polly Apfelbaum, Ingrid Calame, Bonnie Collura, Santiago Cucullo, Lucky DeBellevue, Oliver Herring, Cannon Hudson, Jim Isermann, Marina Kappos, Stacey Lancaster, Jean Lowe, Virgil Marti, Erik Parker, Larry Pitman, Monica Prieto, Stephanie Pryor, Francesco Simeti, Sarah Stevenson, Jay Wilson, Rob Wynne. A new painterly sensibility is the title of the second section of the exhibition which documents the spreading of a new “field” of visual, painterly and tactile sensibility. The artists are: Nicolas Baier, Ellen Berkenblit, Michael Bevilacqua, Ginny Bishton, Andy Collins, Lydia Dona, Angelo Filomeno, Naomi Fisher, Barnaby Furnas, Luis Gispert, Arturo Herrera, Jay Isaac, Brad Kahlamer, Karen Kilimnik, David Korty, Fabian Marcaccio, Sandra Meigs, Alain Paiement, Amy Sillman Cynthia Sisson.
Finally, the hyper-object deals with work centred around the object, examining it under the categories of transit, crossing, the synthesis in which the realities of departure are reabsorbed and transformed. The artists in this section are: Rev. Ethan Acres, Kim Adams, Blue Republic, Geoffrey Farmer, Jerôme Fortin, Susan Graham, Katie Grinnan, Anitra Hamilton, Jacob Hashimoto, Marla Hlady, Evan Holloway, Julian Laverdière, Emil Lukas, Myfanwy MacLeod, Jason Meadows, Jeff Ono, Jeffrey Reed, Michelle Segré, Jude Tallichet, Shirley Tse.
