Migrant art centre in the heart of Athens

AREA (Architecture Research Athens) designed a mobile metal structure to support the activities of an artist-activist collective that wants to involve the local community with its activities.

“Inspired by our locality [the Tavros neighbourhood] in Athens, ed.], which takes its name from a mountainous region in Turkey (Toros Dağları) from which a wave of migrants arrived and settled in the 1920’s, our program will reflect our belief in the transformative potential of shifting perspectives and moving minds and bodies through our relationship with art.” With this statement, the artists' collective Locus Athens opened a multidisciplinary space in the heart of the Greek capital, with the aim of engaging the local community through artistic activism projects. The collective thus asked local studio AREA (Architecture Research Athens) to design a flexible space adaptable to the group's changing needs.

The large interior, which is characterised by a series of reinforced concrete pillars, was left completely empty in order to allow a variety of activities to take place. The only element designed by AREA is a mobile metal structure: a large table-bookcase which can be completely closed by a sliding curtain. The structure is therefore an autonomous environment but also a device that can segment and regulate the exhibition space when necessary.
