In Sedico, in the middle of the peaks of the Dolomites in the Belluno area, the building that once housed the primary schools has been renovated with a conservative intervention and enlarged with a contemporary addition.
The new complex, designed by the Sbarch Bargone Associati studio, conceived as a single piece of architecture, houses the municipal library and cultural centre.

The extension with its square floor plan, houses large multi-purpose rooms and becomes the head of the longitudinal body of the former school. It approaches the existing building with a rigorous and essential contemporary language, respecting its measurements, aligning with its heights and reinterpreting the design of certain architectural elements such as the window frames and projecting entrances.
However the most unusual feature of the project is its shell. The stretched metal sheet cladding, superimposed on the alternating opaque and transparent shell, creates a dynamic effect of depth and an evocative night-time effect.

At night, the civic centre lights up as a luminous lantern with a unique scenic appeal.
Large projecting bow windows echoing the classical frames of the pre-existing building break up the uniformity of this double skin, framing the striking peaks of the Dolomite Alps.
