Scrap materials are transformed into a community space in northern Vietnam

H&P Architects reuses rocks, metal pipes and various debris to build a public building with a heavy base and lightweight roof.

H&P Architects designed the space to be open to the community in the village of Dong Van, Vietnam. It is a place where artistic and cultural activities can be developed, or simply where people can meet to have a coffee.

To construct the public building, the studio reused the waste materials found in the surroundings – steel pipes for the scaffolding, rocks found in the several villages and various debris.

The community centre is made up of stone walls (40cm thick and 3.4m high) arranged in a zigzag pattern to create random connections between spaces and create unexpected situations. The heavy stone walls are contrasted by a lighter structure of innocent tubes and bamboo, which supports the polycarbonate roof.
