Architect Jun Murata renovated a 39 year old residential and office building located in the suburb of Osaka. The conditions of the building were so deteriorated that it was necessary to  intervene in almost every aspect of its architecture.

The building is located in a context with office buildings, factories, houses and a green park. The first step was to remove the old cement coating and to repair the facade. The architect applied a special device of vertical louvers to protect the perimetral walls and to give a recognizable rythm.

The parametric pattern was selected after an accurate study on the given condition of aperture ratio, louver size, cost, weight and so on. Each of the 300 louvers is about 2.55m long, with a thickness of 30 mm per 75 mm depth.

The interiors were completely changed, conceiving a ‘technical’ area for the bathroom, the basin and the kitchen, and giving a minimalist touch to the rest of the floor. The facade grants privacy and special shadows to the indoor. By day, its linear shadow changes dramatically along with sunlight, by night, they are illuminated by an upper indirect lighting, and stand dimly in the twilight.
