Moto Katono: S House

Atelier Moto Katono completed in Sapporo a house where the direct sunlight gets in, through a continuous window, reflects on the ceiling and then floods the living room areas.

Moto Katono: S House
The project sits in a residential area of Sapporo, Japan, surrounded by single family houses, mixed used buildings, love hotels, a nursery and public parks.
The biggest challenge of the project was to get sunlight into the building, as the adjacent 2 story building on the south, projects a constant shadow into the site.

The house gets higher than the adjacent building, in order to get direct sunlight that gets in, through a continuous South window, reflects on the ceiling and then floods the living room areas on the 1st floor. As a result of this necessity to allow light in, the project comprises a smaller house within a larger one.
The continuous opening on the South together with windows on the North facade, allow for the natural air to flow, reducing the necessity of the usage of any air conditioner.
