Turmkunst, art tower in Berlin
In the Steglitz neighbourhood in Berlin a 1970s tower has been transformed into an art gallery and its façade has turned into a canvas for four street artists.
One of the most famous silhouettes in Berlin, a 1970s tower restaurant affectionately known by Berliners as the "Bierpinsel" (Beer Brush), has been transformed into an art gallery and its façade has turned into one of the most complex canvases in Europe.
Now reborn as TurmKunst (Art Tower), curators Christoph Tornow, Daniel Grau, and Benjamin Link have created an ambitious public art project. They invited four international artists, Honet, Sozyone, Craig KR Costello and Flying Förtress to paint the 2,000m2 surface of the building and they responded in a spectacular way. The same artists will also design the nearby underground train station and their work features inside the gallery.
The Mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, said last year: “One of the most memorable buildings of our city – the “Bierpinsel” – is going through a process of change. I am sure that many locals, as well as guests to our city, will appreciate how the futuristic architecture of the monument inspires the four artists.” Beatrice Galilee
