The new Piazza Fontana is a ground-level design, a landscape that is able to welcome, respond to and develop, through its structure, the changing, complex requirements of those who will use it. The design sprung from the desire to create a space that could be used for a wide range of spontaneous applications – from the desire, in other words, to create somewhere complex, a place with a single identity but many possible uses.

The geometrical layout structuring the piazza is made up of a dense, graded mesh of golden rectangles. The measurements for these have been taken from the site's main dimensions, which determine every element of the piazza, from the basic geometry to the design of the paving sections. Within the piazza, the designers have introduced the unusual idea of creating folds in the ground. This three-dimensional modelling of the ground has two roles: it gives each zone its own spatial character, and it emphasises pre-existing spatial tensions, introducing new ones at the same time.

The unity and identity of the design is promoted by the system of triangular sections included within the overarching geometrical layout. Thanks to its continuously varied use of different materials, sizes and combinations, this is also what creates the great variety within this landscape, one uneasily balanced between natural and artificial.
