The Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilisation has been designed by Atelier Rudy Ricciotti inside Fort Saint-Jean at the entrance to the port of Marseilles on the J4 dock.

This project commissioned by the Ministry for Culture and Communication still requires another two years’ work, but once completed it will offer the added advantage of providing access to the medieval fort. In anticipation of the museum’s future activity, temporary access to the fort is being provided along with a small exhibition space inside an old barracks. Inspired by medieval military architecture, Ricciotti’s practice (along with Roland Carta) has designed a temporary construction with a two-year lifespan that resembles an ancient assault tower for surmounting the 17-metre-high bastion.

The supporting structure, in metal clad in a timber grill, will house a staircase and lift while at the top a suspended walkway crosses over the void. E.S.
