Perpignan: a new opera house by Nouvel
The French city of Perpignan has chosen the team it wants to design the new theatre centre that will stand on the site of the old station. It is the Atelier Jean Nouvel, which along with Christian de Portzamparc and Dilme-Fabre has been asked to propose a general plan.
The Théâtre de l’Archipel, the name of the complex, will consist in six buildings of different forms, materials and sizes grouped beneath a large roof. Inside will be a main theatre with 1,300 seats and a smaller experimental space for 400 spectators. Works are scheduled to commence in 2007. The overall cost is estimated as 30 million euro. E.S.
