Mexico City: Kalach designs the new library
An immense, long arch in a spectacular botanical garden. This is the project by the Mexican architect Alberto Kalach (together with Juan Palomar, Tonatiuh Martinez and Gustavo Lapikau), recent winner of the international competition to design the Biblioteca de México “José Vasconcelos”. Coming second and third were projects by California’s Eric Owen Moss and the British practice, David Chipperfield.
The future library will incorporate some obsolete buildings (a railway station long in disuse and an old power station only partially operational), creating a huge industrial archaeology park, alternated with large gardens, with a perfect balance of cultural spaces and nature.
Approximately 600 professionals from all over the world took part in the competition, including: Peter Eisenman, Rem Koolhaas, MVRDV, Herzog & de Meuron, Kengo Kuma and Dominique Perrault. Works is scheduled to commence as soon as next year.
