New look, Trafalgar Square reopens

The mayor of London, Ken Livingstone, and Norman Foster have officially inaugurated the new-look Trafalgar Square, now a pedestrian zone. This is the largest intervention since Lutyens had the fountains installed in 1939. According to the Greater London Authority, it marks a return to the origins, restoring the square’s true vocation as an important civic space, and saving it from the traffic and decades of abandon and neglect.

The project has removed the cars from the north side of the square, redesigning much of the existing space and adding a new café and public infrastructures. The strong point of the whole is a large flight of steps between the National Gallery and the centre of the square that reopens the entrance to the museum that has been closed for more than a century.
