The library of the future at the Triennale in Milan

What should the libraries look like – these centres of collective knowledge, the design of which has seen the increasing involvement of designers and architects all over the world? This is the subject of the conference “Spazi del sapere. Luogo, Significato, Architettura” set to take place at the Triennale in Milan on 25 November at 9.30. A topic highly relevant to the moment, not just in Italy where the events surrounding the European library designed by Bolles+Wilson, a ten year project which has been blocked for over a year for economic reasons (see Milan: go ahead for the library of the future, News 10.10.2002) are emblematic of the complex issues regarding the design of libraries.

The conference has been thought up and organised by a team of companies who operate in the field of architecture and interior design at an international level (Artemide, Caimi Brevetti, Haworth and Marazzi Tecnica) who wished to offer to those in the field as well as an interested public a chance to look into the subject with a series of descriptions of significant projects. These include the reinterpretation and conversion of existing buildings into libraries, museums, foundations, galleries (exemplary cases being the Tate gallery in London and the Museo Rivoli in Turin) as well as projects for new buildings, part of public or private initiatives, for similar functions (such as the Vitra Design Museum in Basel or the recent Museums of Modern and Contemporary Art in Vienna and Munich).

The conference is given extra weight with the contribution of a number of well known international architects such as Mario Bellini, Mario Botta, Michele De Lucchi, Massimiliano Fuksas – who discuss the design of places for culture – as well as members of major institutions such as Gabriele Cappellato from the Accademia di Mendrisio, Igino Poggiali (Presidente Associazione Italiana Biblioteche) and Alessandro Bertoni (Direttore del Sistema Bibliotecario di Ateneo dell’Università Ca’ Foscari di Venezia).
