Philadelphia: Jewish Museum by Polshek
With a donation of 25 million dollars from Sidney Kimmel, the millionaire philanthropist who in 1933 started up the Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, the new Jewish Museum in Philadelphia becomes a real possibility. Not long started, the rounding up of 100 million dollars of funding, 80 of which are for the new building, is therefore already a success.
According to the programme, the current building will be demolished in 2004 whilst the new building (planned since 1998) could be completed by 2006. The architects are New York practice Polshek Partnership Architects, who have designed a five storey building in glass and stone. Inside (with 7432 square metres of floor area) there will be space for a permanent exhibition, temporary displays as well as an auditorium and a centre for academic research.
The museum, which deals with the history of Jewish immigration to the US which began in 1654, started up its collection in 1976 with around forty objects, today it holds around 10 000.
