Toyo Ito and Arup for the Serpentine Gallery

Following on from Zaha Hadid and Libeskind/Arup, this year sees the return of Arup, this time teamed up with Toyo Ito, to create the exhibition pavilion for contemporary art commissioned by the Serpentine gallery in London. Opening 12 July, it will be sited in the garden of the gallery in Kensington Gardens.

Founded in 1970, the Serpentine Gallery is amongst the most renowned locations in the city for its succession of numerous and important exhibitions from Man Ray and Andy Warhol to younger artists such as Damien Hirst and Rachel Whiteread. Since 2000 the Serpentine has commissioned famous international architects to design and build an outdoor pavilion, a temporary structure which transforms the surrounding garden into an exhibition space to house the extensive summer programme.

The building by Toyo Ito and Arup will be used to host special evenings dedicated to urban architecture with interventions and debates from well known architects in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation in London. Inside a special cinema screen will be showing films during the whole of the summer and this year also sees the return of the traditional BBC Proms Poetry.
