Founded in 1970, the Serpentine Gallery is amongst the most renowned locations in the city for its succession of numerous and important exhibitions from Man Ray and Andy Warhol to younger artists such as Damien Hirst and Rachel Whiteread. Since 2000 the Serpentine has commissioned famous international architects to design and build an outdoor pavilion, a temporary structure which transforms the surrounding garden into an exhibition space to house the extensive summer programme.
The building by Toyo Ito and Arup will be used to host special evenings dedicated to urban architecture with interventions and debates from well known architects in collaboration with the Architecture Foundation in London. Inside a special cinema screen will be showing films during the whole of the summer and this year also sees the return of the traditional BBC Proms Poetry.
