Opening of Piano’s auditorium in Rome

The Auditorium designed by Renzo Piano has been opened in Rome, giving the city a whole “Music Park” with three auditoriums, archaeological park, foyer, library, archives and the Santa Cecilia musical instrument museum. A whole day of concerts on Sunday marked the opening of the biggest auditorium in Europe. Starting at 11 in the morning the music started up lead by Myung-Whun Chung with a packed programme running until midnight where the days events were brought to a close with a concert by Patti Smith.

Situated between the Olympic village and the Parioli area, the Auditorium covers an area of around 55,000 square metres with a building volume of 500,000 cubic metres, 40,000 square metres of external space and gardens and 42,000 square metres of services. The three halls (2700, 1200 and 700 seater) have been built using traditional Roman materials; travertine, red brick and lead which over time will take on the same colour as the rooftops of the city. The interiors are instead clad in panels of American cherry, the same wood which was used by Piano for the Auditorium del Lingotto in Turin.
