Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, who in the final stages beat fellow New Yorkers Leeser Architecture and the Dutch practice MVRDV, set up their practice in 1979. Since then their work is a perfect mix – coherent and balanced – of architecture and contemporary art which attempts to transform the vision of architecture, they sum up their approach with the words “Architecture is to change what you expect from it”.
Recent projects include the “Blur Building”, a pavilion designed for Expo 2002 which appears to emerge from a mirror of water, “Facsimile”, a multimedia installation for the facade of the Moscone Convention Center in San Francisco, the Institute of Contemporary Arts in Boston, and “Travelogues”, a permanent installation at the arrivals terminal of JFK airport in New York.
Work is expected to start on site by the end of this year.
