Of Hispanic and Iranian origin, they adopted the name “Foreign Office” in 1992, to underline an “outsider”, antiglobal approach – working all over the world, but following a architectural “mandate” which places culture before everything else.
Recent projects include the International Ferry Terminal in Yokohama – 48 000 square metres to cater for 53 000 passengers a year – a competition which Moussavi and Zaera-Polo won in 1995 and which is due to be completed in the next few months. The design includes a complex network of areas connected together to form a continuous structure able to link three different levels: passenger embarkation, the entrance to the city and the terminal.
