The new American Folk Art Museum in New York now open
Opened yesterday to the public, the new building of the Museum of American Folk which, to underline the spirit of "dynamic growth" that animates it, has changed its name and transformed itself into the American Folk Art Museum. "The new name signals the start of a new and enthusiastic chapter in the forty-year history of the institute, while we await completion of the project", stated Gerard C. Wertkin, director of the museum. The project, costing 22 million dollars, is in the hands of the American studio Tod Williams Billie Tsien and Associates.
The exhibition season which opens the Museum sends a clear signal about the higher objectives which it tries to reach: from traditional popular art of the 19th and 20th centuries up to self-taught contemporary artists, American and otherwise.
