Rem Koolhaas - OMA

An art museum in Las Vegas (State of Nevada), a concert hall in Oporto (Portugal) and a public library building in Seattle (Washington State). These are the three latest projects undertaken by the Dutch practice OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture), led by Rem Koolhaas, and due for completion before the end of 2003. Today Koolhaas is an international star of architecture and divides his time between London, where he lives with his wife, the artist Madelon Vriesendrop; Rotterdam, where he was born and has his office; and the rest of the world where his projects are in course. His architecture is internationally renowned and no less so are his thoughts on contemporary urban reality. Indeed, before becoming an architect, Koolhaas was a journalist. In his first book “Delirious New York”, dated 1978, he tries to explain how a city such as New York, totally unplanned, could become the epitome of the contemporary. An objective failed miserably by the architects and urban planners of the Modern Movement. See also Domus 833 January 2001: “Junk Space.
