The winners have been announced of 24 projects which by 2004 will change the face of the Catalan "capital”. 155 professionals participated in the competition which closed last July, with a total of 381 proposals.
Amongst the international winners, the Swiss team of Herzog & de Meuron were awarded the construction of the “pabellón del Fòrum”. On the Spanish side, Josep Lluís Mateo and Eduard Bru, well known exponents of the Barcelona school, will be responsible for the “Palacio de Convenciones” and the university building which will be built around the Fòrum whilst Elías Torres and Martínez Lapeña will take on the project for the “Gran esplanada”. Two new parks will be designed by Madrid practices Abalos y Herreros and Beth Galí and Alejandro Zaera.
Space is also given to emerging talent such as Enric Massip, who will be responsible for a hotel in calle Taulat.
The first “Fòrum Universal de les Cultures”, will open on the 23 April 2004 (running until 24 September), and is organised by the local council with the support from the Catalan and Spanish government and the collaboration of Unesco and will provide a great occasion for discussing cultural diversity, peace and the sustainable city.
