An urban park was designed around a mountain in China

In downtown Suzhou, the Lion Mountain was surrounded by the remnants of a declining amusement park. TLS Landscape Architecture completed a regeneration project for the site.

In the heart of Suzhou, the majestic Lion Mountain has been a symbol of the city for centuries, a natural and cultural landmark deeply rooted in local history. However, in recent decades, its presence had been overshadowed by a declining amusement park and a small muddy lake. In 2016, the TLS design firm won an international competition to bring the mountain and its surroundings back to life. After nine years of work, the project was completed, transforming the area into a lush, sustainable park that celebrates the natural and cultural heritage of the place.

Focus of the project is the expansion of the lake at the foot of the mountain, now a water surface that amplifies the majesty of the surrounding landscape. The water management system has been completely rethought: urban runoff is filtered through wet terraces and cypress forests, improving its quality to the point where it is suitable for human contact. This ecological renaissance has made possible the development of a vibrant small boat program, restoring to the community a space for gathering and recreation in harmony with nature.

A large two-kilometer circular promenade embraces the lake and the mountain. A new cultural campus is also developed along this promenade, which includes a Science Museum designed by Perkins and Will, a Civic Theater designed by SANAA, and a new Suzhou Museum venue by GMP.

In addition to the important architecture, the pavilion dedicated to a modern sound composition by musician Yifang Han, a musical meditation immersed in the forest, is established here. On the slopes, however, discrete paths wind through vegetation and rock formations, while spaces dedicated to play and nature discovery have been created in more accessible areas.
