Samsung, a (made-to-measure) smartphone for each of us

The Koreans present in Milan the new Galaxy A series: six different devices to satisfy the needs of each type of customer. The Galaxy A80 stands out: the first with a rotating camera. Prices from 159 to 679 euro.

Pleasing everyone with a single smartphone is impossible, also because the best are always (and rightly so) quite expensive. But making everyone happy with a made-to-measure smartphone is indeed possible. This is the goal of the new Galaxy A series by Samsung. Before discussing the six different models in detail, something must be said: after the launch of the Galaxy A9, with its posterior quad-lens camera, the Korean manufacturer once again chose Milan as its European headquarters for its global presentation (also scheduled for Bangkok and San Paolo). Of course, being held at the same time as the Salone del Mobile was significant, but the fact is that Milan is no longer considered less important than London or Paris. Actually, in the tech sector Milan has taken on a key role on the European scene.

Getting back to the smartphones: Samsung’s goal is to offer an ad hoc phone for each customer at different price ranges. In fact, the cost of the latest ones goes from 159 to 679 euro. The basic models in the family – A10, A20e A40 – rewrite the affordable phone offer, while the more alluring A70 and A80, created to satisfy the needs of younger people, are valid alternatives to most of the top competition. Let’s begin with the most interesting and innovative phone, because the Galaxy A80 is the first Korean smartphone with a hidden camera, which rotates automatically each time the Camera app is opened, thus activating both the rear and front lens. It also offers the largest display among the new Galaxy models, with an Infinity FHD+ Super Amoled panel (6.7 in., notchless), Dolby Atmos audio to intensify the music video, TV series and film experience and a 3,700 mAh battery with 25W Super-Fast Charging to avoid unwanted surprises. With an octa-core processor, 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of memory and screen fingerprint scanner, the Galaxy A80 will be available in stores starting in June in Phantom Black, Angel Gold and Ghost White for 679 euro.

The younger sibling of the top phone, the Galaxy A70 presents an identical display but differences on the triple rear camera, with a main 32 MP lens, 5 MP camera depth and 8 MP ultra-wide-angle lens. A mix that guarantees lots of shooting options and detail qualities, especially for portraits. What stands out is the best performing battery of the entire family: 4.500 mAh, supported by the Samsung fast-charging system. Available from the end of the month in Black, Blue, White and Coral, the Galaxy A70 will cost 419 euro.

Same colours but costing 350 euro is the Galaxy A50, an evolution of the mid-range of a few years ago, which here is the ideal model for anyone wanting a versatile camera that can simplify taking pictures and, at the same time, guarantee quality photos. From theory to practice, thanks to the triple camera with 25 MP primary sensor and the Live Focus option that allows users to choose what to focus on and where to apply the blurred effect. What makes it a true aim-and-shoot is the integrated artificial intelligence that recognizes up to twenty scenes and optimizes colours and frames, detecting classic defects to create photos without the need for touch-ups.

The Galaxy A40 and A20e models share a good part of the innovations that distinguish the new family but they are the only ones with a display smaller than 6 inches, since more compact screens are preferred by European customers. For the Galaxy A40 the Infinity-U display Super Amoled Full HD+ measures 5.9 inches with a 25 MP dual frontal camera that creates light-filled selfies. The posterior lens is double, with a 16 MP and a 5 MP Ultra-Wide sensor with 123-degree view, similar to the human eye. 3.100 mAh battery with fast-charging at 15W costing 259 euro.

Under 200 euro we find the Galaxy A20e, the smallest in the series with a diagonal screen measurement of 5.8 inches. The other specs are also smaller, with 3 GB RAM and 3.000 mAh battery. Arriving in May in black and blue, white and coral, at the cost of 189 euro.
Rounding off the offer is the Galaxy A10, with its 6.2-inch screen, 13 MP rear camera with f/1.9 aperture and 5 MP front lens. The 3.400 mAh battery is promising while the available colours will be blue and black. Price: 159 euro.
