Always at ease in ranging across a wide variety of disciplines, from masterplans to social housing and projects for major fashion houses, OMA has completed its first project in Turkey, and has done so through an adaptive reuse. It is Beymen Tersane, the department store designed for the Turkish luxury group Beymen and situated within the historic spaces of Tersane-i Âmire, on the northern shore of the Golden Horn: the ancient imperial arsenal which, from the 15th century until its dismantling in 1922, represented the productive core of Ottoman naval power. After decades of neglect, the complex has been given a new lease of life as part of Tersane Istanbul, a wider urban regeneration programme aimed at reconfiguring a vast former industrial area through a mix of hospitality, cultural and commercial functions, and at giving the city back large portions of its waterfront, which is currently largely inaccessible. As often happens in OMA’s work, the architectural design unfolds through a playful interplay of contrasts. Whilst the exterior design fully preserves the rough, massive character of the industrial shell, the interiors reveal a dynamic and vaguely theatrical layout: a sequence of single-storey exhibition galleries, each distinguished by different geometries and material atmospheres, inviting visitors to explore freely—without any hierarchical pathways—amongst fashion brands and contemporary art installations.
From ottoman arsenal to luxury mall: OMA reinvents a piece of Istanbul
OMA’s first completed project in Turkey transforms the historic spaces of the former imperial arsenal on the Golden Horn into a luxury department store as part of one of Istanbul’s most ambitious urban regeneration programmes.
