Now you can buy Keith Haring’s seats for Luna Luna, the wild amusement-park-museum of the ’80s

Dalí, Hockney, Basquiat and Keith Haring himself were the protagonists of the utopia that was Luna Luna. Today, the radical design brand Gufram is reissuing two of the seats from the carousel Haring created for the iconic amusement park in Hamburg.

In Moorweide Park in Hamburg during the summer of '87, one could walk through a colorful door designed by Sonia Delaunay and enter a toyland: Moon Moon was the visionary project to turn a playground into a museum, or a museum into a playground. The idea had come from André Heller, an artist, curator, and songwriter who for the rides, conceived as site-specific works, had called Basquiat, who would spin a Ferris wheel to the tune of Miles Davis, Dali, who would create a "Dalídom," Hockney a super-colored pavilion, Tinguely a poster, and Beuys, who would write a poster. And then there was also Keith Haring.

For Luna Luna, the graffiti artist had translated the unmistakable signs with which he "daubed" the New York subway into three-dimensional shapes in garish hues. In his version of the carousel archetype, anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures amplified their dynamism by the rotating motion of the machine, creating a feast of strong colors and profiles. Instead of white horses, one could go around sitting on sculptures whose form did not suggest a clear approach to use but, as the photographs tell, left full freedom of interpretation.

Gufram, a brand that has put a face on radical design since the 1960s, has decided to bring two of those seats back to life: the seven-legged dog and the crawling baby. The polyurethane from which the Pratone and the Cactus coat rack are also made brings a piece of Luna Luna into homes, in the Guflac finish, the brand's special patented paint.

In the Turin-based company's catalog of furniture that has helped redefine the boundary between function and imagery, Haring's works seem to be in their natural environment: the expressive power of figurative design strongly characterizes the seating, allowing for immediate identification.

Gufram's initiative comes two years after the reopening of the amusement park in the U.S.; after its success in 1987, Heller's plan to tour the park through Europe had been made impossible by costs that were too high. So the exhibits had been stored in 44 containers, sold, and shipped to Texas, where they remained for more than 30 years.

In 2019, an investment of more than $100 million by DreamCrew, the company co-founded by musician Drake, allowed the exhibits to be restored and brought Luna Luna first to Los Angeles and then to New York.
