Apple and Issey Miyake, the designer Steve Jobs loved, create a surprising iPhone accessory

Made in Japan with a structure inspired by the “a piece of cloth” concept, the iPhone Pocket blends Issey Miyake’s experimental aesthetics with Apple design’s precision.

The new collaboration between Apple and Issey Miyake — almost a tribute to Steve Jobs’s long-standing admiration for the Japanese designer — gives life to a design object that redefines the idea of a technological accessory, blending the brand’s minimalist ethos with Apple’s functional approach. Called iPhone Pocket, it is a 3D knitted sleeve designed to adapt to any iPhone model (or to hold other small essentials), and will be available from November 14 in selected Apple Stores across Italy, France, the UK, Japan, China, Singapore, South Korea, and the United States.

Made in Japan, this new portable pocket stands out for its three-dimensional knitted structure, featuring an open-rib pattern reminiscent of the maison’s iconic pleated garments. The design, at once essential and versatile, draws from Issey Miyake’s founding concept of “a piece of cloth” — reinterpreted here through a technological lens to create a flexible, adaptive pocket.

The case comes in two lengths: a short version, designed to be worn around the wrist like a micro-bag, and a longer one to be worn crossbody. The palette ranges from mandarin orange to peacock blue, offering eight color options for the short model and three for the long one.

“The design of iPhone Pocket reflects the connection between the iPhone and its user, considering that an Apple product is conceived to be universal — both in aesthetics and in function”, explains Yoshiyuki Miyamae, on of the Design Directors at Miyake Design Studio. An exercise in discreet yet technical design, iPhone Pocket conceals a meticulous study of how fabric and device can interact, integrating form and material with the evolving gestures of everyday use.
