DJI is launching its first robotic vacuum cleaner, entering a new market beyond drones, video equipment, and bike engines. The rumor originates from a report published by the state-backed China Securities Journal. Leaked images of the packaging reveal the device's name to be ROMO, confirming it will be a vacuum cleaner with a mopping function.
Details are obviously scarce, as the company hasn’t provided any details or comment. Nonetheless, Chinese sources suggest that the ROMO will integrate advanced indoor navigation and mapping features, derived from the expertise DJI developed on its drones, giving the product a significant advantage in terms of precision and reliability in comparison with existing competing products.
IAccording to data from IDC updated to March 2025, shipments in the global robot vacuum cleaner market reached 20.6 million units, marking an 11.2% year-on-year increase. The robotic vacuum cleaner market is dominated by Chinese brands, despite being pioneered by US-based iRobot (Roomba). Roborock leads with a 16% market share, followed by iRobot with 13.7%, the only non-Chinese brand in the top five. Ecovacs, Xiaomi, and Dreame occupy the three remaining positions.
For DJI, the ROMO will be another instance of a well rehearsed playbook that sees the company transferring its extended technological know-how from drones, to camera gear, to other areas of business. In 2024, DJI launched its first bike, the Amflow mountain bike, and debuted a powerful electric bike motor, the Avinox. Both have taken the e-bike market by storm, and faced serious pushback and resistance - due to their technological advantage - from other established Western players in the field.
