New facade for Real Madrid's Estadio Santiago Bernabéu nearly complete

The project, which also includes urban surrounding changes, will offer a new image of the area and many new services.

Gmp Architekten, in collaboration with Spanish studios L35 and Ribas & Ribas Arquitectos, is renovating the Santiago Bernabéu stadium of Real Madrid, and according to the German studio, the facade is about to be completed.

The new façade of the stadium will be characterized by curved blades in stainless steel that flow around the structure creating an asymmetric pattern at the same time sculptural and dynamic, which generates different plays of light throughout the day and seasons. To complete the façade was also provided a retractable roof, which will allow the stadium to be used throughout the year and for different events. And at night an LED lighting system will project multimedia content on a large scale.

The surrounding urban space will also change, thanks to two major interventions. First, the redevelopment of the south side, with the demolition of the old existing shopping center, to make room for greenery and facilities open to the public, including the Museum of Real Madrid. To the north, there will be commercial areas, entertainment services, a luxury hotel, and business spaces. The idea is to convert the boxes on this side of the stadium into conference rooms with views of the playing field, directly connected to the hotel. A new plaza facing the green Paseo de la Castellana is also underway.
