With the new Pixel Fold, even Google offers a foldable phone now

With Google’s entry into the “smartfold” arena, will we finally see new standards for the hitherto most disappointing aspect of these devices, namely software design?

Next week at its I/O conference, Google will finally unveil the Pixel Fold, the company’s first foldable smartphone. The company has already unveiled the device in a short teaser video, probably to keep further rumors and leaks from polluting next week’s official launch marketing narrative.

The Pixel Fold has the same form factor as the Samsung Galaxy Fold, with an external, smaller screen and a wider, square-ish display folded inside.
There is no official word on price or specs for now, but according to well-sourced rumors, the device won’t be cheap and could cost around $1800.

The new Pixel Fold is good news for anyone interested in this new smartphone category, even for Pixel competitors like Samsung or Honor.

While Android has been addressing the new form factors for a while now, the fact that Google is joining the foldable fray will probably mean a faster implementation of new, specific functions and interface design solutions to the benefit of all manufacturers.

So far, the absence of software that fully exploits the bridging capabilities of these new devices, especially when opened or folded in half, has been their most disappointing aspect.
