In an era dominated by streaming and multifunction smartphones, the return of devices designed solely for music listening is both surprising and fascinating. Among the newest arrivals is a compact lossless music player that, with its retro design, aims to recall the portable cassette players of the ’80s and ’90s — while embracing the latest technology.
The Fiio Snowsky Echo Mini, released by Chinese electronics brand Fiio (specialized in audio devices), is compact and lightweight: it measures just 8 × 5.4 × 1.4 cm and weighs only 55 grams, making it easy to slip into a pocket. It features a 1.99-inch color IPS display which, while playing music, simulates the motion of tape reels — a clear nod to vintage tape decks.
This aesthetic choice, inspired by skeuomorphism, is certainly eye-catching, though it might lead some to mistake it for a “toy.” In reality, it’s a high-performing device that combines quality, a clean interface, and an affordable price point.
The Snowsky is equipped with two high-end CS43131 DACs, delivering up to 250mW of output power and supporting lossless formats like DSD, WAV, FLAC, APE, and OGG — in addition to common MP3s. These can be stored on its 8GB internal memory, expandable up to 256GB via microSD card.

The device allows for wireless listening via Bluetooth, but also includes a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack and a 4.4 mm balanced output for demanding audiophiles. As for battery life, the 1100mAh rechargeable battery provides up to 15 hours of continuous play.
Available in three colors — black, blue, and pink — the Fiio Snowsky Echo Mini is priced at €64.98.
