VIDEO: Steps seatings by Raw Edges

Designed by Raw Edges for Greenwich Peninsula, East London, Steps is a system of concrete seats redefining the concept of use of public space.

Commissioned by Greenwich Peninsula in association with NOW Gallery, Steps is the first long-term outdoor commission created by the Israeli duo Raw Edges. This concrete seating system was designed to enhance the urban ambiance of the rising quarter of Greenwich Peninsula, East London, part of a complex real estate development.

Fabricated by Mass Concrete, it was inspired by people’s behavior within the city, searching for the ideal resting position. The best positions were revealed by students during a lunch break, a group of builders having coffee on site or a bunch of friends. Seats is composed of concrete clusters, where each unit is like a scaled up domestic armchair, and when arranged together with their different heights, creating an urban texture that invites people to step on, climb and relax.
