During the April 2017 edition of Milan Design Week, Sunbrella presents “Connexions”, an artistic installation by French photographer and artist Charles Pétillon. The artist’s installation, an inflatable structure of over four metres tall, is made up of ten majestic balloons linked together and covered with the latest Sunbrella textiles. The structure was transported and photographed in various different indoor and outdoor spaces, to contextualise and magnify Sunbrella’s textiles. Both the installation and series of art photographs will be exhibited at the Super Design Show. The project will also be accompanied by a video documenting the behind-the-scenes creation of the artistic journey.

As part of the Super Studio Design, Sunbrella invites its visitors to enter into a black cube where the installation and photographs are backlit. Plunged into the dark, the public connects directly with the installation, circulating feely around it while observing the photographs on the walls. Through this interpretation, Charles Pétillon and Sunbrella create connexions between reality and virtuality, art and industry, materials and their relation to the world.

Sunbrella is also launching a website dedicated to this installation, where each individual can create their own connexion. From a smartphone or computer, the user simply has to choose a location in which to place the structure. The image is generated in Google Street View and sent by email to the user who can then publish it on social media. Halfway between reality and virtuality, this digital animation corresponds to Charles Pétillon’s concept and allows participants to create fictional images for a real-life work. The simulations from around the world are broadcast on a screen at Sunbrella’s stand, resonating with the artist’s photographs. Another screen broadcasts, in real-time, a map of the world where the destinations of the global users are shown.
