Optica Clarà

Based on ephemeral recovered wood frames and white membranes, catalan studio Arnau renewed an optician store in Olot bringing out the workshop hidden in the back.

Catalan architectural firm Arnau Estudi renewed an optic centre in Olot, Girona, imagining a clear, bright and rational space. They set off from the existing store, with generous windows framed with natural wood.

Based on frames made of 7×7 cm wood strips, they made up a 3D structure resembling a scaffolding that joins the strips laterally and duplicates the mesh of the facade inside the shop. This way they generated a structure with a porch, or atrium, embracing the inner door in the centre, the display windows at each side, and structural pillars in the boxes formed between the empty spaces.

Just behind the atrium there is the customer service space, the shop, and the workshop: one of the key points of the project. The architects decided not to leave this space hidden in the back but to bring it right in front, interacting with the central space, just filtered by a glass display of the major glasses in the optic shop.

The closed rooms that host the optician’s consulting room, the office, the storage and the service rooms – are placed on the left rear part, making space more regular. The optical glass windows lit up or backlit giving the space an ephemeral character. Only the recovered wooden structure, which stretches out to the atrium, dares to break the purity of the dominating whiteness.
