Bouroullecs: Mattiazzi / 77

The French designers continue their collaboration with the Veneto maker for the Uncino chair, a wooden sculpture between home and office.

Ronan and Erwan Buroullec were among the first to work with the Udine maker, on the Osso chair, under the art direction of Nitzan Cohen and Florian Labl, who succeeded in transforming a subcontractor into a quality brand name.

And they are happy to carry on working with their minds on the idea of “carving” wood, both craftwise and with numerically controlled milling machines. The Uncino collection is the ninth in a catalogue that features such designers as Sam Hecht, Konstantin Grcic, Jasper Morrison and Leon Ransmeier. These latest additions are a family of revolving wood chairs with two different backs, one with a four-spoked revolving base, the other with a sled base on three legs.

The wooden components, cut with the greatest care and attention, are held in place by a slender bent metal frame that merges almost organically with them. So much so that the wood seems to embrace the metal rods, whose subtle outline is stamped on the wood surface in light relief. Uncino deliberately has no precise place in the domestic or professional environment, reflecting an open-minded outlook on life and work.
